The Kent Current is a new, independent news website for Kent. We believe local journalism is important, but local newsrooms are struggling following years of cuts and a collapse in advertising revenue.
We do things differently here. We have no corporate overlords, we don’t run advertising, and we don't resort to clickbait.
We reject the idea that local news can’t cover the big stories facing our community. We believe local journalism should be informative and substantial and challenge those with power.
Our model is entirely reader-funded. While our core news briefings are free, we put some additional content behind a paywall. As a result, those who can support our work get a little extra while keeping the main editions free for everyone else.
A subscription to the Kent Current costs £6 per month or £60 per year, and ensures the long-term sustainability of independent journalism in Kent.

Kent Current is the project of Ed Jennings and Steven Keevil, who were involved in local politics before becoming disillusioned and writing about it instead. They have been covering news in Medway in one form or another for over a decade, starting as citizen journalists tweeting proceedings before moving to local blogging and setting up the award-winning Local Authority news website to provide truly independent local news.
Kent Current adheres to the Standards Code adopted by Impress, which serves as the independent regulator of our work. If you wish to make a complaint about anything we have published, you can find details of how to do so here.
Kent Current is published by Authority Media Ltd, Valiant Suite, Second Chance Community Centre, Brompton Hill, Chatham, ME4 4XL.
